Route planning: the distance and time expectation

Route plan so far, more stops to be added, this just gives me a baseline. The trip will be a minimum of 12k miles and 200 hours of driving. 2/3 of the driving is on the way there, as this route assumed just heading straight home from Denali. Adding a stop at Kenai would add about 800 miles and 13 hours. Adding a stop to Juneau from Denali could add up to 1800 miles and 36 hours. So there’s room for basically at least 3000 miles of extra driving just within Alaska itself.

I typically like to drive no more then 400 miles or six hours a day, if avoidable, so that basically sets me up for more than 30 driving days, really at least forty.

There are places within Canada where premium gas is presently close to $8 per gallon, though I guess not quite with the conversion rate. Still, I’m not expecting much more than 15mpg for most of the way.  So realistically this is 1000 gallons of gas, and looking at GasBuddy, I can expect to pay close to $6 a gallon or more for parts of it.  That makes the gas alone on this trip potentially upwards of $6000.  Hopefully less, but that plus food, tolls, and the occasional lodging.  This is pretty darn likely to end up being a ten thousand dollar trip before it’s all over.  I don’t doubt that it will be worth it, though.

Even with all that figured out, I am still seriously considering adding a camper trailer to make the extended time off grid a little more comfy.
