This is a good story and worth reading, but the summary is that it may be controversial that Disney fairly openly uses scent stimuli to manipulate guests. The article also says, though, that the side effects of this manipulation are mostly positive, with effects of stress alleviation and positive mood.
Is this morally superior to the practice of other internet and retail companies using anxiety to make us more impulsive? Personally, I think it is. Basically everything I read criticizing Disney comes down to them being manipulative for… giving us what we want in return for money. Maybe I’m missing something, but giving us a multi-sensory positive experience to me seems like the right kind of “manipulation.” I don’t see it as manipulative to give someone a positive thing in return for encouraging a transaction. What do you think?
